Volunteer Opportunities An Introduction to Volunteer Opportunities with Ecology Ottawa
Ecology Ottawa is in a building phase and we believe that there are tens of thousands of people across the City that will support our objective of making the City of Ottawa the green capital of Canada if we can successfully reach out to them. We very much appreciate your willingness to consider volunteering a portion of your valuable time to help us achieve our goals, and we want to work with you to identify volunteer activities that respond to both Ecology Ottawa's priorities and your areas of interest. With this in mind, we have prepared the following list of areas where we currently need your support. Please take a look and let us know if any of these activities would interest you.
More than anything else, we need help with good old fashioned organizing, like putting up posters, disseminating flyers, collecting signatures, raising money and staffing booths at events, but we also have a variety of other needs outlined below if you would like to contribute in other ways. Translation: We are committed to developing a fully bilingual website and we need help translating material.
Databasing: We need help preparing data to be integrated into one of our databases (this does not required technical expertise.
Disseminating pamphlets: Ecology Ottawa is in a building phase and we believe that there are tens of thousands of people across the City who would support our objective of making the City of Ottawa the green capital of Canada if only they knew of our existence. We need people who are prepared to go door-to-door in their community (and perhaps beyond) distributing our quarter page pamphlet.
Fundraising: Maintaining the website, producing and disseminating material and securing space for Ecology Ottawa booths at key events all cost money. Fundraising is one of the most essential ingredients to the success of Ecology Ottawa. There are a wide range of ways that you can contribute to organizational fundraising, and we would be very interested in discussing ideas with you if this is an area that interests you.
Events Planning: We need creative, energetic people to help us think of and carry out events that will make sure City Hall is not making environmentally harmful decisions and connect Ottawa to its local environment.
Staffing Key Events: Ecology Ottawa hopes to have booths at the various festivals and events that will occur during the Fall. We will use these booths to provide Ottawa residents with information about Ecology Ottawa (and other environmental organizations active in the city) and collect signatures in support of our campaigns. We are starting to collect names of volunteers that would be willing to help prepare and staff these booths.
City Hall Watchdogs: Ecology Ottawa is in large part about holding City Council accountable for its environmental performance. For instance, we want to develop an ongoing report card on the environmental voting records of individual City Councillors. We need people who have time during the day to observe key City Council meetings and help us keep our hundreds of active supporters informed about how our City Councillors are voting on a day-to-day basis.
Design Expertise: We need volunteers that can help us design posters, pamphlets, banners, and a wide range of other Ecology Ottawa material.
Website Development:http://www.ecologyottawa.ca is our greatest resource and our “resources” page is a virtual gateway for people across the city interested in learning about local environmental organizations and relevant initiatives around the world. We need your help maintaining and updating our website as well as helping Ecology Ottawa build a presence in the virtual world.
Research: If you have experience with research and writing and are interested in environmental policy there are a range of areas where we could use your help.
Local Events Calendar: Ecology Ottawa maintains a calendar on our website of local events that are relevant to our objective of making Ottawa the green capital of Canada and we would welcome support updating and maintaining the calendar.
