Ottawa's eco-logical competition March 5th-7th, 2010 The first annual Ottawa Eco-Logical Competition is a three-day student charrette to develop a conceptual design of a green building that meets environmental, social, and economic goals for sustainability. The competition is open to college and university students in engineering, architecture, urban planning, interior design, design, environment, project management, and related fields. Biodiversity in your backyard: gardening to maximize diversity with speaker Jeff Skevington Wednesday, March 10th @ 7 p.m. Location: Canadian Museum of Nature (VMMB), Metcalfe and McLeod Streets During this talk, Jeff will explore several aspects of naturalized gardens. He will give ideas of how to achieve a naturalized garden, provide a case study of moving from a monoculture of grass to a diverse urban landscape, discuss some of the plants and sources of plants for such gardens, and introduce us to some of the magnificent mini-beasts that occur in such naturalized settings.

Debate on Blanding's Turtles & Terry Fox Dr. Extension Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 7:30pm - 9:00pm Beaverbrook Community Centre, Kanata (west end of the Calian Mall, entrance off Beaverbrook Rd., just west of Teron Rd.) Concerns have been expressed that the construction of the Terry Fox extension will destroy the habitat of an endangered species of turtle called the Blanding's Turtle. The area also contains other rare flora. Kanata Beaverbrook Community Association will host this debate on the issue. This will be an open meeting and all interested persons are invited to attend. Debating the question will be Matt Muirhead, president of the Briarbrook Morgan's Grant Community Association and John Bennett, executive director of Sierra Club Canada. The meeting will be chaired by KBCA president Gordon Henderson. Earth Hour Candlelight Vigil on Parliament Hill Saturday, March 27, 2010 @8:30pm The Green Party is hosting a candlelight vigil on Parliament Hill to commemorate Earth Hour. At 8:30pm the lights on Parliament Hill will be turned off and for sixty minutes the participants will be joining in the global Earth Hour movement calling for immediate action on climate change issues. The vigil is open to the general public. Participants are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early in order to be present when the lights are turned off at precisely 8:30pm.
