Thousands sign petition calling for end to transit strike
Petition to be delivered to council Wednesday
January 26, 2009 In less than a week, over
four thousand Ottawa residents have signed a petition urging city
council to get back to the negotiating table with the transit union and
produce a fair agreement to end the strike. The petition was launched
by community group Ecology Ottawa last Tuesday. It can be viewed and
signed online at www.ecologyottawa.ca "It's time for the public
to say, enough is enough. Our city can't function without transit,"
said Mike Buckthought, Ecology Ottawa steering committee member. "The
overwhelming response to this petition shows the frustration and
urgency that the public is feeling. We must resolve the situation
immediately." Ecology Ottawa will present the petition to city
council this Wednesday, January 28th. A copy will also be sent to the
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 279. "We're petitioning city
council because they are our representatives, and are supposed to be
accountable to the public," says Buckthought. "But clearly both sides
need to get back to the table and be willing to compromise, in order to
reach an agreement that will get the buses up and running again."
About
Ecology Ottawa: We are a not-for-profit, grassroots organization
working to make Ottawa the green capital of Canada. We believe that
Ottawa residents are concerned about issues such as pollution, waste,
and global warming, and that they want sustainable communities where
public transit, renewable energy, recycling, and the protection of
green spaces take priority. We are working with residents and
organizations across the city to ensure that these concerns are heard
at city hall. Find out more and sign up for our e-mail updates at
