Send
your city councillor and other candidates in your ward the message that
you care about the environment and you vote, with this simple online
postcard.
2. Attend Our Events
Come out and support events. On September 7th, we will be launching our 2010 Council Watch Report, while on September 26th, we will be hosting a mayoral debate on environmental issues in partnership with other local organizations.
3. Join us
Volunteer to help us mobilize residents in every
ward to elect councillors who understand, care about, and are ready to
take action on pressing environmental issues. To volunteer, please
contact
with your name and contact
information, your city ward, and any special skills you have to offer.
Here is a list of some of the areas that we could use
some help with:
Social media. Ecology Ottawa is on
the web! We've got 23
Facebook groups (one for every ward) and we are looking for
volunteers to join, participate, and lead the discussion in each of
them.
Writing/blogging. We are looking for local
wordsmiths to
share their thoughts on the environment and environmental issues in the
city.
Candidate outreach. We are looking for volunteers
to help with our efforts to engage candidates over our election
priorities and events.
Distributing
material. We are looking for volunteers who are able to help us
get out information to the residents of Ottawa.
Organize
events. We are holding meetings around this city for residents to
discuss the environmental issues that matter to them and how we can move
forward together. We are looking for volunteers who are able to help
out with the organization of these events.
Boothing. We
are at festivals and events throughout the
summer and need your help to staff our booth, talk to people, and
promote the environment.
Candidate debates. If you know
of any upcoming candidate
debates please let us know. Represent Ecology Ottawa and ask a question
about the environment at a candidates debate.
Small business strategy. We are looking to reach out to
businesses to seek their support and to engage them as members of the
community.
4. Share your thoughts
Let us
know what kind of environmental issues you want
to see your
candidates address. Please fill out our survey on key
environmental
priorities for the election here.
5. Join the
Facebook group for your ward
This is a space where people who live in your ward can work
together during the election to let candidates know that they care about
the environment and they vote. Find your ward group here.
Project Underway to Make Cycling Routes Safer
The EnviroCentre is now working with the City of Ottawa on the Cycling Safety Evaluation Project. We are inviting cyclists to participate in an online survey that will help city staff identify the most hazardous intersections or road locations within the city from a cyclists perspective.
If you cycle, the City of Ottawa would like to hear from you about issues you face on the road or pathways.
The South March Highlands — along the north edge of Kanata — have the highest ecological value and biodiversity of any area in the City of Ottawa. These are Canadian Shield uplands, more than a billion years old, rich in wetlands and mature forest. They are home to more than 654 species, including seventeen species that are at risk of going extinct.
This area is now under threat due to the construction of a road - Terry Fox Drive extension - as well as subdevelopment.
Sign the petition to end the transit strike. It's time to let city council know that we want an end to the transit strike, and we want it now! (January 2009)
