Signing Ecology Ottawa's Green Budget Petition is a first and important step, but there are other simple things that you can do to help make the environment a priority during the upcoming budget debate. Ecology Ottawa is a volunteer organization that depends on people like you to make a difference, so please take a moment out of your busy schedule to take some of the following actions:
Tell Your Friends: Send out a simple email to all of your friends asking them to sign the Green Budget Petition. Just cut and paste the following link to the Green Budget Petition and ask your friends to check it out: http://www.ecologyottawa.ca/take-action/sign-on/index.php
Help Collect Signatures: Print out a petition sheet, available below, and take it to work, or your local community center, club, arena or place of worship. Or ask your favorite local store to make it available for customers to sign. If we all collect our own signatures we'll have thousands in no time!
Spread the Word in your Community: We have prepared a simple poster that you can print out and put on bulletin boards in your community. You could put them up on bulletin boards at local schools, universities, community centres, libraries, churches, mosques, synagogues, stores or coffee shops. See below for the poster.
Attend Budget Consultations: The draft budget will be tabled February 7. The public consultation process will be held from February 10 to February 19. Attend one of the Councillor-led consultations in your area. Find the date and place for one near you on the City of Ottawa's website Tell your Councillor you want City Council to keeps its environmental promises and make the environment a priority in 2007.
Write a Letter to the Editor: Ottawa's budget will be getting a lot of attention from the media over the next six weeks. Write letters to newspapers in response to articles about the city budget. Argue that the environment should be a priority in 2007 and, where possible, mention Ecology Ottawa's Green Budget Petition. Contact the Ottawa Citizen, email for the Ottawa Sun, for Metro, for Le Droit or contact your community newspaper. Call your favorite radio station. Try CBC's Ottawa Morning.
