A few years ago, the director of the OHRI Cancer Centre, Dr. Rebecca Auer (now the CEO of OHRI), tasked us with making our research greener. As a scientific research group, with the ultimate goal of improving patients’ lives, we believe we have a unique role to play in reducing waste and energy consumption.

City staff presented the final draft of its Climate Resiliency Strategy, Climate Ready Ottawa, at the October 21 meeting of Council's Environment and Climate Change Committee meeting. Ecology Ottawa delegated on the strategy, commending the plan for its comprehensive scope and the public engagement leading to it, as well as offering some recommendations for its improvement.

Every Drop Matters: Rethinking our Relationship with Water

The average Canadian uses 335 litres of water daily. For many of us, that water is invisible. It’s the steam rising from our coffee or the laundry spinning in the machine. We use water so much without noticing. But what if we began to notice? What if water was not invisible, but alive? Not only a daily resource, but a sacred being on its own?

The Final Draft of the New Zoning By-law is Here!

In June, we urged everyone to weigh in on Draft 2 of Ottawa’s New Zoning By-law. The City had taken some great steps towards creating the framework for creating healthy, walkable 15-minute neighbourhoods, but there were still ways that the new By-law could improve. The City has now released the Final Draft of the New Zoning By-law.

Ecology Ottawa calls for better tree data, accelerated tree-planting

Ecology Ottawa was at Environment and Climate Change Committee to speak to the latest installment of the City's Tree-Planting Strategy, as well as two related memos: a Tree Equity Analysis and a Tree Canopy Mapping report. In short, we asked for much more data than staff is currently providing, as well as an acceleration of our canopy-strengthening efforts. We invite you to read our delegation.

We Watch City Council

We watch over and engage closely with Ottawa City Council. We celebrate environmentally responsible actions, we bring to light the things that hurt our local environment, and we advocate for greater ambition across a range of local issue areas.

We Organize Communities

We work to create a mobilized constituency of Ottawans who demand action and leadership on the environment. We engage thousands of Ottawa residents each year at the door, at events and through their community associations. We do this so that we know – and they know – what local environmental issues are top of mind, and what can be done about them.

We Work in Partnership

The environmental crisis can only be solved by an engaged community working together across various sectors and levels of government. We work to engage and mobilize support from Ottawa residents, political representatives, local businesses, community associations, industry and professional associations, cultural groups and citizens groups.

Bill 60 Rally Remarks

Ecology Ottawa recently joined other Ottawa organizations to express our opposition to the provincial government's Bill 60, and omnibus bill that—among other things—would prohibit installing bike lanes in Ontario municipalities if this involved removing car lanes. This sort of reconfiguration is essential for us to meet our goals of shifting from car-oriented travel patterns to sustainable, person-oriented travel. Please read our remarks.
