Election 2010: Ottawa Votes Environment

This year will be an important one for Ottawa's environment. On Oct. 25, 2010 we will have a new mayor and city council, and it is up to us to determine whether or not that council is filled with people who understand, care about, and are willing to act on the city's key environmental challenges..

Here's how you can help elect a greener city council:

Join us

Volunteer to help us mobilize residents in every ward to elect councillors who understand, care about, and are ready to take action on pressing environmental issues.  To volunteer, please contact with your name and contact information, your city ward, and any special skills you have to offer.

Here is a list of some of the areas that we could use some help with:

  1. Social media.  Ecology Ottawa is on the web!  We've got 23 Facebook groups (one for every ward) and we are looking for volunteers to join, participate, and lead the discussion in each of them.
  2. Writing/blogging.  We are looking for local wordsmiths to share their thoughts on the environment and environmental issues in the city.
  3. Candidate outreach.  We are looking for volunteers to help with our efforts to engage candidates over our election priorities and events.
  4. Distributing material.  We are looking for volunteers who are able to help us get out information to the residents of Ottawa.
  5. Organize events.   We are holding meetings around this city for residents to discuss the environmental issues that matter to them and how we can move forward together.  We are looking for volunteers who are able to help out with the organization of these events. Click here to see notes from past events.
  6. Boothing.  We are at festivals and events throughout the summer and need your help to staff our booth, talk to people, and promote the environment.
  7. Candidate debates.  If you know of any upcoming candidate debates please let us know.  Represent Ecology Ottawa and ask a question about the environment.
  8. Small business strategy.  We are looking to reach out to business to seek their support and to engage them as members of the community.
