Demand bike share in Ottawa!

This is a joint campaign by Bike Ottawa and Ecology Ottawa. To learn more, visit the campaign page.

Ottawa’s public transportation system is in crisis. Busses are chronically late and frequently cancelled, forcing people to wait in the cold, miss appointments, and arrive late to work. Our light rail system is plagued by mechanical issues, which causes delays, reduced service, and outright shutdowns. Ottawans who rely on public transit are often forced to choose between expensive private rideshare or simply forgoing travel.

Bike share would help address this crisis. A quarter of trips in Ottawa are under 2 km and the median trip distance is 3.4 km, well within bikeable range. Bike share is affordable, accessible, and efficient, and would help Ottawa meet its commitment that by 2046, half of all trips will be via sustainable transportation modes. Montreal, Toronto, Hamilton, and Quebec City all have established, successful public bike share systems.

We, the undersigned, call on Ottawa City Council to launch the first phase of a bike share system by spring 2027. The system should

  • Include both standard and electric-assist bikes available year-round in a station-based system
  • Serve a geographical area beyond the downtown core, including equity-deserving neighbourhoods
  • Be integrated with the OC Transpo network (bus and O-Train) and major institutions
  • Work with the City of Gatineau and the National Capital Commission to ensure a single, seamless, regional system
  • Receive substantial municipal financial support to safeguard affordability
  • Be expanded in subsequent phases
