Ecology Ottawa is urging the City of Ottawa to champion biodiversity by implementing a systematic way of monitoring and reviewing our shared urban biodiversity.

Biodiversity monitoring involves data collection and assessment. This information is essential for us to know if the policies in place are accomplishing their goals or not.

This is a big job, and the City can't do it alone. In addition to our petition Ecology Ottawa is calling on you to help! We have designed a series of fun, interactive online events about our nearby nature and guide all of us to become biodiversity champions using citizen science. From trivia, to webinars, to bioblitzes – you won’t want to miss it! Click here to learn more about our Online Events Series.

We are in a biodiversity crisis worldwide, and Canada is no exception. The federal government has responded by setting biodiversity goals and targets to be achieved by the end of 2020. One of those targets is for municipalities to include biodiversity considerations into their planning practices.

The City of Ottawa has implemented some policies that support urban biodiversity, however, Ottawa is only halfway there. In fact, we are missing one of the most important steps of effective urban biodiversity conservation: monitoring and revision. Without this critical information, we are not able to celebrate our policy successes or improve our tactics where needed.

We, the undersigned, call on the City of Ottawa to champion biodiversity by implementing a systematic way of monitoring and reviewing our shared urban biodiversity.
