Community Vigil for the Rideau Canal Skateway

When
Where
Pattersons Creek Park @ Linden Terrace and Queen Elizabeth Drive
This event has already taken place.

Gather in community to honour loss and uncertainty surrounding the canal skateway, and explore collective resilience and positive action.

The Rideau Canal Skateway as we know it has altered because of climate change.

The canal is the longest skating rink in the world and part of our identity, with many diverse meanings, connections, and benefits for our community.

The vigil will be a time to:

  • Pause and acknowledge what is happening due to climate change
  • Honour feelings related to this loss within the support of community
  • Be with the canal and our uncertainty, not knowing what will happen in the years to come
  • Question and imagine what is ours to do
  • Nourish resilience and our capacity to enact positive change

The gathering will be facilitated by Robin Macdonald of Heart Land. Community guests to be announced.

Where: Patterson Creek Park just east of the public washroom building, a few steps from Queen Elizabeth Parkway, Canal kilometre marker 2.6 on Patterson Creek

What to bring: Please dress warmly & bring extra layers. Bring a camp chair if you would like to sit during the vigil.

Everyone is welcome. Arriving at the vigil by foot, public transit and carpool is encouraged.

This is a free event, however we ask that you register on Eventbrite if you are planning to come. This helps the coordinating team with our planning and allows us to contact you with event updates.

The Community Vigil for the Rideau Canal Skateway is hosted by Heart Land, in partnership with Community Deathcare Ottawa and Ecology Ottawa.
