School Presentations Recap 2026

This past year, Ecology Ottawa’s EcoYouth Council prepared presentations on environmental topics to be delivered in classrooms. Each topic was selected and created to suit classrooms from kindergarten all the way up to Grade 12.

In the fall, each EcoYouth Council member selected a topic connected to ecology, sustainability, or climate action. Throughout the year, they researched their topic and developed an educational workshop for students. This peer-to-peer learning model creates opportunities for children and youth to explore environmental issues while supporting young environmental leaders in building their communication, facilitation, and leadership skills.

Butterflies in Ottawa. Ariella, an EcoYouth Ottawa member, introduced a Grade 1 class to butterflies found in Ottawa.

Climate Advocacy. Kaamil, an EcoYouth Ottawa member, presented a workshop on climate advocacy to a Grade 9 class.

From March to June, EcoYouth Ottawa members visited classrooms across Ottawa to deliver workshops on topics including waste diversion, climate advocacy, local wildlife, butterflies, urban heat, and environmental policy. The program reached approximately 300 students between the ages of 6 and 17 through 10 classroom presentations. The workshops were well received by teachers and students, with all teachers expressing interest in hosting EYO next year. This initiative demonstrates the value of connecting children and youth with environmental issues through presentations led by experienced young leaders. EcoYouth Council members are able not only to share environmental knowledge, but also to introduce students to meaningful opportunities to become involved in their schools and communities.

Environmental Policy and Pipelines. Aaron, an EcoYouth Ottawa member, led a Grade 4 discussion exploring the potential benefits and concerns associated with a proposed pipeline project.

Waste Diversion. During a workshop, students created recycling badges showing their commitment to sorting waste properly. They drew themselves as recycling superheroes.

The inaugural year of the School Presentations initiative proved to be an impactful addition to EcoYouth Ottawa's programming. Using feedback from participating teachers, we will continue to strengthen the workshops, expand the range of topics available, and reach even more classrooms during the program’s second year.

Thank you to all teachers who hosted a workshop!
