Voting Options: Federal election 2025

It's critical that everyone's who's able votes in the federal election!

Fortunately, there are many voting options in Canada, and one of our volunteers compiled them below. Elections Canada works to make voting easy and accessible for everyone, but if you have questions on any of the below, contact Elections Canada.

Registration and ID

  • No need to register before the election! Check your registration and update your address here. If you aren’t registered already, you can register now, or even at the polls.
  • You should have received your Voter Information Card (VIC) by mail by April 11. If you didn't, you may not be registered or forgotten to update your address, or there may have been an error in your information. Update your registration here or visit or call your Election Canada Office before April 22 at 6 pm.
  • Identification: Elections Canada offers three different ways to verify your identity. Expired identification can be used if it still has your name and current address. Only original ID is accepted, and e-documents can be used if they are printed out.
    • Option 1: Any ID card issued by the federal, provincial, territorial, or local government that has your name, address and photo, such as your driver’s license.
    • Option 2: Two pieces of ID, both of which show your name, and at least one of which with your current address.
      • These pieces of ID can be your VIC, Canadian passport, citizenship card or certificate, SIN card or paper, health card, Indian, Métis, or Inuit status card, hunting or fishing license, student ID, tax documents, banking statements, insurance policies, blood donor card, prescription bottle label, utility bills, and many more (full list here).
    • Option 3: If you don't have an ID, you can still vote if you declare your identity and address in writing, and have someone who is assigned to the same poll as you and who does have ID vouch for you.
      • If you don't have proof of your address—if you're a student, long-term care home resident, or unhoused, for exampleyou can still vote! Ask an administrator of a facility you live in or receive services from to fill out a letter of confirmation of residence.

Accessibility and Accommodations

  • If you need accommodations, check out your options here.
  • Your VIC will have information about the accessibility of your polling locations. If you didn't receive one or if you need more information, contact Elections Canada.
  • Every poll has tools for voters with accommodation needs, including large-print ballots, braille voting templates, magnifiers with a light, and large-grip pencils (or bring your own writing tool!).
  • You can also bring a support person you trust to help you mark your ballot or prove your identity, and they will have to make a written declaration to keep your vote secret. You can also request support from a poll worker, and a second poll worker will be present to act as a witness.
  • If you need sign language interpretation, you must request it by April 22 at 6 pm.

Mail-in Voting

  • The deadline to apply to vote by mail is April 22 at 6 pm
  • If you apply to vote by mail, you cannot vote in person
  • Your completed voting kit will be due to Elections Canada on April 28 at 6 pm
  • If you choose to vote by mail, ensure there is enough time for your ballot to reach you, for you to vote, and for your ballot to reach Elections Canada in time.
