Ottawa Citizen: NCC won't replace most diseased ash trees it cuts until 2018 or later

The National Capital Commission plans to cut down nearly 15,000 trees as a result of the emerald ash borer infestation. While they plan to plant a tree for each one they remove, about 90% of these replacement trees won't be planted until 2018 or later.

In contrast, the City of Ottawa is taking a more pro-active approach, planting two trees for every one that's being removed, and whenever possible, before the infected ash tree is even removed.

Recently Graham Saul, executive director of Ecology Ottawa, spoke to the Ottawa Citizen about why the NCC’s plan to replace most of the ash trees in later years is just not an effective strategy.
