Early in 2014, Tree Ottawa was beginning to organize and mobilize around our inititave to protect, plant and promote Ottawa’s trees. Ottawa’s private Montesorri School, Academie de la Capitale, heard about Tree Ottawa and wanted to get involved.
They are the first school in the city to express an interest in working with a local grassroots environmental organization and have truly made trees part of their eduational framework, in the classroom and in the community.
Just last week, our Tree Ottawa organizer presented to the school about the importance of tree conservation and tree planting and it was very well received. The student’s were very excited and their homework included going home and adopting a tree and placing it on the ” tree map” on the Tree Ottawa website. If you would like to adopt a tree also, you can click here to place it on the Great Ecology Ottawa Tree Map. In addition, each grade has agreed to plant two trees which totals fifteen trees planted this year.
The tree planting event was held at Morrison Park, off of Morrison Drive in Nepean, very close to the school on May 27, 2015. The park is very accesible to the school, so the students can see their trees mature and grow over the years. All the students were very excited and had fun tree planting. Live 88.5 radio station played music during the planting, adding to the fun. It was very easy for them to get involved and make a lasting impression on the green space in their neighbourhood and the city for years to come.
