Let's Depave Paradise!

This Saturday, June 20th Ecology Ottawa will be kicking off the 2015 Depave Paradise Ottawa event in partnership with St. Anthony Catholic School and with the help of an enthusiastic group of volunteers. The project includes the depaving of up to 100m2 of asphalt at the school in order to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gases, restore natural diversity and wildlife habitat, and provide locally-grown food. Depave Paradise will directly benefit the local watershed and help restore natural areas while also building awareness and promoting community-based watershed stewardship by engaging people in transformative change. It will be a fun way to make positive improvements on the environment and the surrounding community. The children attending the school were involved in the planning process of this project and are extremely excited to see the playground reflect their vision upon arrival at school in September after the summer holidays.

The event will be kicked off by a visit from MP Paul Dewar, MPP Yasir Naqvi, and Councillor McKenney at 10:00 am. The day will then consist of a BBQ and all of the asphalt you can get your hands on. It’s sure to be an amazing event that will require a strong group effort. We're still looking for more volunteers to help out for a couple hours in either the morning or afternoon, so if you, your friends, or your neighbours might enjoy a day of food and sunshine please fill out or pass on the volunteer sign-up form online at:

Bring your gloves and steel-toed boots if you have them, but we will have extras on-site for anyone who doesn't have their own. Try to wear a hat, long pants, boots, and sunscreen and feel free to bring shovels or pry bars if you have them. We're really excited for the opportunity to get our hands a little dirty and to make the schoolyard a little greener, softer, and safer.
