Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway Waterfront Linear Park

The National Capital Commission (NCC) invites you to participate in a public consultation on the draft plan for the proposed Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway waterfront linear park. The planning work thus far has focused on developing key policies and proposals to take advantage of the spectacular corridor landscape and views, highlight the river’s heritage and ecology, and reconnect people with the river.

The purpose of this third public consultation is to seek the public’s input on the updated draft concept for the overall park, as well as the more detailed draft concept for the section of the park between Westboro Beach and the proposed Cleary light rail transit station. The proposal includes potential actions to be undertaken in the short to medium term, as well as a medium- to long-term landscape strategy to enhance the park. The plan builds on input received from the public consultation held in May 2015 and from more detailed planning, landscape architecture and engineering expertise. Some of the key ideas that will be presented include the following:

Creation of better connectivity from local neighbourhoods to the shore with three new, at-grade signalized crossings
Development of three to six animation nodes at strategic sites to provide a variety of amenities for park users
Ecological restoration of the shore habitat
Proposal to better highlight the aquatic habitat with the construction of a boardwalk
Opportunity to comment on two parkway alignment options to facilitate mobility for all transportation modes and provide more park space on the river

Building on public consultations held in 2014 and 2015, this consultation will present the revised concept plan for the Sir John A. Macdonald linear park. As requested by the public, this additional consultation will present specific demonstration plans for Rochester Field and Westboro Beach/Atlantis, as well as proposals for improving connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians. It also proposes safer parkway crossings for the public, as well as reduced speeds and the option to reduce traffic lanes, and it improves on a number of issues. The public is invited to review the proposed concepts and provide their comments and suggestions.

The format of the event is a roaming workshop. Each segment of the waterfront linear park will be presented at a station, and participants will be free to visit the various stations and fill out a questionnaire.

Members of ECCC invited to webinar on incineration

On April 8, we invited members of City Council’s Environment and Climate Change Committee (ECCC) to attend a webinar on incineration. This webinar is timely: Council is considering incineration as an option for dealing with Ottawa’s waste, since staff has warned Council that the Trail Road Landfill—which currently receives the majority of Ottawans’ garbage—will fill up soon.
