Voting Day in Ottawa-Vanier

[FRENCH]

Today, Thursday, November 17th, is the provincial by-election in the riding of Ottawa-Vanier. It's VOTING DAY!

Ecology Ottawa attended the Ottawa-Vanier candidates' forum last Thursday and heard from four candidates on the proposed Energy East pipeline. We asked candidates if they wouldoppose the construction of the proposed Energy East pipeline in light of the risks it poses to our water (background details here) and climate (background details here).

Here's what they told us:

  • Claude Bisson (Ontario New Democratic Party) expressed serious concerns about the environmental impacts of the proposed Energy East pipeline and suggested that he would not support it unless a number of critical issues were resolved, but did not clearly state his opposition to the project.

  • Nathalie Des Rosiers (Ontario Liberal Party) expressed serious concerns about the environmental impacts of the proposed Energy East pipeline and suggested that she would not support it unless a number of critical issues were resolved, but did not clearly state her opposition to the project.

  • André Marin (Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario) stated strong support for the construction of the proposed Energy East pipeline, but acknowledged the importance of an Environmental Assessment.

  • Raphaël Morin (Green Party of Ontario) was the only candidate to give a clear "no" when asked if he supported the proposed Energy East pipeline. He cited both climate impacts as well as threats to Ottawa's waterways as reasons for his opposition to the pipeline.
