2017's Top Tree Giveaway Events

ecology Ottawa at glebe

Over the summer, Ecology Ottawa has given away more than 10,000 free trees to people in the Ottawa area, and we could not have done it without our many volunteers, partners, and staff who worked so hard to make the tree giveaway events a success. It was a pleasure to visit so many communities who care about environmental issues and want to do their part in growing the urban canopy. Here is a list of the top summer tree giveaway events that exceeded all expectations. Again, thanks to everyone involved, we could not have done it without you!

Great Glebe GREEN Garage Sale

On May 27th, we had dozens of volunteers helping during the annual Great Glebe Green Garage Sale. Now in it’s tenth year, what started as a humble Ecology Ottawa fundraiser has grown into an important community event. Thanks to our hardworking volunteers, we gave away over 2,300 trees that day! To learn more about the Great Glebe GREEN Garage Sale, check out their website here.

10th Annual Touch a Truck

Ottawa's tenth annual "Touch a Truck" - Mothercraft's annual charity event that raises money for Ottawa's vulnerable families - was a lot of fun for the kids who were able to explore all kinds of trucks and other vehicles. We had a lot of fun alongside them giving away hundreds of free trees! To learn more about or to support Mothercraft, click here.

Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival

Recognized as North America's largest dragon boating festival, the four day celebration offers free admission to concerts, amusement attractions, sports demonstrations, exhibitors, and non-stop racing. Despite the dubious weather, hundreds of concert goers found the time to bring home a tree or two. To learn more about next years event, click here.

Tulip Festival

As one of Ottawa's most iconic (and scenic) events, the Tulip Festival attracts visitors local, national and international alike. Not only did we give away more than 500 trees among the beautiful arrays of tulips, we found ourselves in meaningful conversation with people from across the globe who care about environmental issues. Thanks to our partners who run Tulip Festival every year! If you want to find out more about Tulip Festival 2018, click here.

Department of Finance Enviro Fair

Enviro Fair is an annual event hosted by The Department of Finance to celebrate Canadian Environment Week, which saw a number of environment-themed kiosks set up in the lobby of 90 Elgin Street. Exhibitors included EnviroCentre, Hydro Ottawa, the City of Ottawa, VRTUCAR, OC Transpo and of course Tree Ottawa. The event was a great opportunity to raise awareness of environmental initiatives and opportunities in the city.

Ottawa Champions Baseball Club

Not only was there a chance to catch a baseball, you could also get a free tree at one of the Ottawa Champions baseball games we attended this year! This was the first year we partnered with the Champions, and we had a great time talking about Ecology Ottawa and goofing around with their mascot, Champ. Click here to learn more about the Champions or to buy tickets for the spring.

Eid El Fitr Summer Festival

Eid El Fitr - which is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan - was a huge success this year, and we again had the privilege of being invited into a community to engage in conversation and give away a ton of trees. To learn more about the group that organizes these festivals, visit their website.

Canada's Table

In addition to seating and feeding 1,000 people, Canada's Table also invited us to provide trees as the centre pieces for their tables. Guests could appreciate the little saplings as decorations and, if they so pleased, take them home after dinner! From all accounts it was a hugely successful evening and we were so excited to be a part of this tremendous event.

Tree Giveaway at Eddie Bauer Orleans

The Eddie Bauer location at Place d'Orleans was very outgoing and reached out to us to give away trees at the location. Eddie Bauer is a store that sells clothing for people who love the great outdoors. They also donated a portion of that days' sales to Ecology Ottawa! To find more about the quality products Eddie Bauer sells, click here.

Thank you for your time and interest! We would also like to thank the Community Foundations of Ottawa, Community Foundations of Canada and Ontario150 for making this tree giveaway possible. We can't wait until Spring 2018 to continue our campaign to engage the residents of Ottawa and grow the urban tree canopy.
