This Giving Tuesday, support a greener Ottawa

GivingTuesday-Wide

Giving Tuesday is a day dedicated to giving back. With the spirit of the holidays drawing near, hear the stories of four Ecology Ottawa supporters and make a generous gift to support our work!

It has been a busy 2017 at Ecology Ottawa. With the support of thousands of volunteers and hundreds of donors, we ushered in a strong Urban Forest Management Plan, gave away over 11,000 trees to homeowners across Ottawa and helped stop the Energy East pipeline. We demanded that Ottawa City Hall puts their money where their mouth is on climate change action, and we’ve been ramping up a campaign to better integrate green infrastructure into street design.

This work is the product of an entire community - people like you who care about Ottawa’s streets, trees, water and climate. In this movement of thousands, this Giving Tuesday, four supporters tell us why they care.

andres-and-diana.jpgAndrés Javier Peña Cabra is an urban planner who was working on sustainable transportation in the busy city of Bogota, Colombia before he and his wife Diana moved to Ottawa. Andrés and Diana wasted no time after landing before stepping forward to volunteer for Ecology Ottawa. Andrés shares his experience working on our research project on the state of Ottawa’s active transportation file.

If you've heard of the term “sustainable development,” your life has been touched by Jim MacNeill. Jim coined the term, and dedicated his life towards the idea of sustainable development and environmental protection. Upon his passing, his daughter, Cathy Hodgins, made a generous contribution to Ecology Ottawa, allowing us to give away 1,500 trees to honour his legacy. Learn about Cathy’s story working with Ecology Ottawa to commemorate a pioneer Ottawa environmentalist.

Laurine Tertre just knew the basics about Ecology Ottawa when she packed up and left France for a five-month internship in Canada’s capital. Four months later, she has now designed an active transportation survey, led the silent auction team to raise over $4,000 at EcoFest, spearheaded the work of our bilingualism team, and experienced a touch of Canadian winter. Learn more about Laurine’s amazing work with Ecology Ottawa.

Gillian Walker is what we at Ecology Ottawa call a super-volunteer. She came to us two years ago with experience fighting tankers on the West Coast with Dogwood Initiative, and right away she led a canvassing team, knocking on doors to stop the proposed Energy East pipeline. Her positive attitude is contagious, and her determination is inspirational. Find out more about Gillian’s story.

Through their research, donations, valuable time and leadership, Andrés, Cathy, Laurine, Gillian and thousands of others are engaging with Ottawa residents, holding decision makers accountable, and advocating for a greener Ottawa. This Giving Tuesday, how will you stand up for our environment?

Join Andrés, Cathy, Laurine, Gillian and tens of thousands Ottawa residents making a difference in your community! Will you make a donation to support our work?
