FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6 May 2026 | OTTAWA | UNCEDED, UNSURRENDERED TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHINAABEG

Ottawa, ON — Bird Friendly Ottawa (BFO) today announced that the City of Ottawa has achieved Bird-Friendly City status at the intermediate level.

“We’re delighted to have attained this achievement,” said Deborah Doherty, Co-chair of Bird Friendly Ottawa. “This shows the City of Ottawa’s commitment to protecting birds and their habitat and recognizes the work already accomplished to bring us here.”

The Nature Canada Bird Friendly City (BFC) program was created in 2019 to address the decline in bird populations. The program recognizes municipalities working to reverse bird population declines, and tackles three main areas of change:

  1. Reducing key threats to birds (such as roaming cats, pesticide use and collisions with windows and vehicles)
  2. Restoring nature and important bird habitat, and
  3. Engaging residents to explore nature, celebrate birds and help monitor bird populations.

Ottawa is municipality number 41 to earn Bird Friendly City certification in Canada.

“Bird Friendly Ottawa volunteers and partners across Ottawa have been busy leading bird walks, adding native plant gardens and working on restoration projects, as they applied for the Nature Canada Bird Friendly City designation. It has been a team effort among community groups and with support from the City” said BFO’s Louisa Coates.

BFO will be hosting and participating in World Migratory Bird Day 2026 events throughout the month of May.
