A note from Katie Gibbs, our new Chair of Board of Directors

I’m thrilled to take on the position of Chair on the Board of Directors for Ecology Ottawa! 

First, to Liz Bernstein, our outgoing Board Chair, thank you! Liz, your dedication and service to Ecology Ottawa leave huge shoes to fill. You expertly steered the organization through challenging times and transitions. We were so lucky to have you in this role and I am relieved that you’ll be staying on the board so that we can continue to benefit from your experience and knowledge.

I’m a long-time Ecology Ottawa volunteer, donor and steering committee member. I understand how important this organization is to our City and I’m honoured to take on the Chair position at such a pivotal time. 

I’ve been working for bold climate action for over two decades through many avenues. I have a PhD in conservation biology from the University of Ottawa. I co-founded and ran a non-profit organization called Evidence for Democracy that advocates for science to be used in government decision-making. I’ve been involved politically at the provincial and federal levels, and I’ve been to more climate rallies than I can count! 

I moved to Ottawa for grad school 17 years ago and fell in love with this City. I live in Centretown with my husband and my two young kids. The past few years have been difficult for our City. From high profile problems with public transit to the increasing impact of climate change on extreme weather events—tornadoes, flooding, wildfire smoke, the devastating derecho this summer. We know these are not fluke events but unfortunately likely to be our new normal. 

We need bold action to build a city that is sustainable, and climate resilient, for everyone. 

Ecology Ottawa has done amazing work in its fairly short history, establishing itself at the core of Ottawa’s local environmental movement and working to build a more vibrant city. One where our streets are lined with a rich tree canopy to keep us cool during heat waves. Where we design our neighbourhoods to put people first. Where we are at the forefront of transitioning away from fossil fuels.

With a municipal election on the horizon, we are at a pivot point where we and our neighbours will decide the direction of our City. It is an exciting moment where we can dream big about what we can accomplish. I can’t wait to work with the incredible Ecology Ottawa team of staff, volunteers, board members, donors and supporters to help make Ottawa the environmental leader we all know it can be.

Tout d'abord, à Liz Bernstein, notre présidente sortante du conseil, merci ! Liz, votre dévouement et votre service à Écologie Ottawa laisse tout un défi à relever. Vous avez dirigé l'organisation de façon experte à travers des périodes difficiles et des transitions. Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance de vous avoir dans ce rôle et je suis soulagée que vous restiez sur le conseil afin que nous puissions continuer à bénéficier de votre expérience et de vos connaissances.

Je suis une bénévole, une donatrice et un membre du Comité directeur d'Écologie Ottawa depuis longtemps. Je comprends l'importance de cet organisme pour notre ville et je suis honoré d'assumer le poste de Présidente à un moment aussi crucial. 

J'ai travaillé pour une action climatique audacieuse depuis plus de deux décennies à travers de nombreuses manières. Je suis titulaire d'un doctorat en biologie de la conservation de l'Université d'Ottawa. J'ai cofondé et dirigé un organisme sans but lucratif appelé Preuves pour la démocratie, qui milite pour que la science soit utilisée dans le processus décisionnel du gouvernement. Je me suis engagée sur le plan politique aux niveaux provincial et fédéral, et j'ai participé à plus de rassemblements sur le climat que je ne peux en compter ! 

J'ai déménagé à Ottawa pour mes études supérieures il y a 17 ans et je suis tombée en amour avec cette ville. Je vis dans le centre-ville avec mon mari et mes deux jeunes enfants. Les dernières années ont été difficiles pour notre ville. Qu'il s'agisse de problèmes de transport en commun très médiatisés ou de l'impact croissant des changements climatiques sur les événements météorologiques extrêmes - tornades, inondations, fumée de feux de forêt, le derecho dévastateur de cet été. Nous savons que ces événements ne sont pas le fruit du hasard, mais qu'ils risquent malheureusement de devenir notre nouvelle normalité. 

Nous avons besoin d'une action audacieuse pour construire une ville durable et résiliente au climat, pour tout le monde. 

Écologie Ottawa a fait un travail incroyable dans sa courte histoire, s'établissant au cœur du mouvement environnemental local d'Ottawa et travaillant à construire une ville plus dynamique. Une ville où nos rues sont bordées d'une riche canopée d'arbres pour nous garder au frais pendant les vagues de chaleur. Une ville où nous concevons nos quartiers en donnant la priorité aux gens. Une ville où nous sommes à l'avant-garde de la transition vers l'abandon des combustibles fossiles.

Avec les élections municipales qui se profilent à l'horizon, nous sommes à un moment charnière où nous et nos voisins déciderons de l'orientation de notre ville. C'est un moment passionnant où nous pouvons rêver en grand de ce que nous pouvons accomplir. J'ai hâte de travailler avec l'incroyable équipe d'Écologie Ottawa, composée d'employés, de bénévoles, de membres du conseil d'administration, de donateurs et de partisans, pour aider à faire d'Ottawa le leader environnemental que nous savons tous qu'elle peut être.
