OREC Securities Offering

Local investment in renewable energy infrastructure is what the Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op is all about.

OREC is now raising $1.7 million by October 31. That’ll be enough to complete funding for our six newest solar energy projects across Ottawa, bringing our total across the city to thirteen.

We are making new friends and taking action to improving walkability, cyclability and active transportation for a greener, safer, healthier and more accessible Ottawa! This summer a great team of interns worked to keep these Complete Streets issues moving forward – big thanks to Nandita, Trina, Andrea, Dana and Tabitha!

Calling All Cyclists - We Can Make Cycling Better in Ottawa

Join the city-wide biking audit Cycle In on September 14 to help improve biking in Ottawa. Are you an experienced cyclist? Sign up to lead an existing ride or start a ride from your neighbourhood to reach City Hall at 9 AM!

Success will depend on mobilizing volunteers to lead at least one ride from each Ward. You can help us by:

Being a Team Leader – We need to find experienced cyclist who would be willing to lead a ride to City Hall from one of our starting points on Monday, September 14, arriving downtown at about 9:00 AM.

The Trees have found homes!

We are now officially out of both types of saplings. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by our office to pick up trees. If you’re interested in planting trees we highly recommend Ferguson Forest Centre. If you’d like to plant trees but don’t have space where you live you can sign up for our newsletter and/or like us on facebook and follow us on Twitter (@treeottawa) to find out when we’re hosting community plantings in your neighbourhood.

Highly Anticipated Speakers

Andrea Reimer, Deputy Mayor of Vancouver and one of the most progressive environmental voices in Canadian municipal politics, speaks about Vancouver’s strategy to become the Greenest City in the world by 2020 and a 100% Renewable City by 2050. She will be joined by Jody Williams, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, who advocates for environmental and social justice; and by David Chernushenko, the City of Ottawa's Chair of Environment Committee, who will reflect on our city's renewable energy strategy.

Decision 2015: Promoting Environmental Leadership in the Federal Election

It may be difficult to imagine a Canadian governmental system in which all federal parties champion progressive environmental policy and stick to their promises.

It may also be difficult to imagine national discussions about environmental issues that are not politically divisive. But these sorts of governments exist elsewhere in the world, and they are held accountable by the citizenry that votes them in.

Trees in need of homes!

Do you love trees? Tree Ottawa has a number of Colorado Spruce and White Cedar saplings that need homes. The saplings are free and can be picked up at our office (1 Nicholas Street, Suite 1510) any time between 9am and 3pm all this week (August 17^th- 21^st) with the exception of August 18^th between 12:30 and 2.

The saplings are species native to the Ottawa area and come from the Ferguson Forest center. All of the saplings have a number indicating what number out of the million-tree goal they are. Tree Ottawa will take care of adding your sapling to the Great Ecology Ottawa Tree Map all you need to do is take care of your sapling or saplings.

A Call to Action for Ottawa residents on Watershed Protection. Review and comment on Ontario Conservation Authorities Act Public Document until Oct 19, 2015

The Ontario Conservation Authorities Act, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has posted a discussion paper that is open for comments and review from the public. The MNR is encouraging the public to participate in a review of the document. By adding your voice to the comments you are helping to affect potential change in governance of watershed conservation in our beautiful province. For Ottawa Residents, the closest watershed locally is the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and the next is the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority in Carleton Place.
