18 June 2025 | OTTAWA | TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHINAABEG

Ecology Ottawa today released its Strategic Plan, “Growing Movement, Rising Action.” The Plan outlines Ecology Ottawa’s vision, mission, and theory of change for 2025 to 2027.

“A moment when we increasingly see the effects of climate change, when the biodiversity crisis continues unabated, and when many are feeling hopelessness and anxiety calls for a bold and inclusive response,” said Executive Director William van Geest. “This Plan gives us direction to navigate the next three years—delivering impactful programs, building our community, and empowering people for environmental action in our nation’s capital.”

Ecology Ottawa’s Strategic Plan outlines the organization’s intention to grow their movement to 50,000 people, to accelerate local environmental action and impact systems change; to continue their collaborative work, including with community groups, environmental organizations, City staff, and elected officials; and to political action, whether around elections at all levels of government or between these pivotal moments.

It also describes the culture of care, well-being, and fulfillment of potential that Ecology Ottawa will cultivate across its community, and the organization’s commitment to embedding justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in every part of its work, in addition to engaging meaningfully in Truth and Reconciliation.

Along with refined strategic direction, the new Plan outlines three reviewed program areas—Climate, Nature, and People—each of which responds to an ecological crisis.

“As we witness leaders abandoning the progress we’ve made on climate change, the need for local environmental action couldn’t be clearer,” said Katie Gibbs, Chair of Ecology Ottawa’s Board of Directors. “Whether it’s engaging with City of Ottawa officials, distributing native trees for planting, or empowering youth for environmental action in their communities, we’re excited to continue our hard-hitting grassroots work and continue our vision to make Ottawa the green capital of Canada.”

The new Strategic Plan will take Ecology Ottawa to its twentieth anniversary in 2027.
