7. How would you ensure that Ottawa meets its emissions reductions commitments in Energy Evolution — i.e., achieving net zero by 2050?

Ahmed Rashid

“I will hold the city to its own targets. That means retrofitting city buildings, electrifying the transit and city fleet, and pushing for deep energy retrofits in affordable housing. I will also push to modernize our grid and invest in battery storage so we capture power we currently lose and use it during peak times. That lowers bills and reduces emissions at the same time. Net zero is not just a climate goal. It is a cost saving goal. I will report progress publicly every year so residents can hold us accountable.”

"Expanding the LRT lines with funding from the Federal or provincial governments would be a big step. As the nation's capital we have a duty to lead the way when it comes to sustainability. In addition to that, investing in renewable energy. Solar farms could be created in more rural areas of the National Capital Region, and of course the gradual switch from diesel to electric buses for public transit.

Most importantly though, I think that the city will need to, over time, change its infrastructure away from cars, and many of the new communities that will be built should be built to be sustainable and walkable. Promoting the use of bicycles when possible is a part of my larger campaign platform. Upon reconstruction/maintenance of sidewalks where applicable. I would like to add a bike lane along the side. Currently bike lanes are mostly relegated to painted lines on sidewalks, which is not sufficient infrastructure, and adding a bike lane along sidewalks would make the roads safer for cars and bikes, further encouraging bike use, while adding a layer of separation between them and car traffic."
