4. How would you protect Ottawans, especially our most vulnerable residents, from the effects of climate change and extreme weather events (flooding, storms, wildfire smoke, extreme heat, etc.)?

Malloum Abakardid

"Flooding comes first. On July 1, College Ward filed 2,282 service requests, more than any other ward. I'd prioritize storm sewers, culverts and drainage in flood-prone areas, and residential protection like backwater valves. And I'd publish stormwater spending ward by ward, every year, so residents can see what was fixed."

Laine Johnson

"Over the past 4 years, College Ward has suffered several major weather events resulting from climate change, including the July 1 floods. I have made several motions at Council to protect residents from future climate change events, including a direction for staff to evaluate the causes of flooding, with solutions; a request for a meteorologist to analyze weather patterns so we can better understand what we’re facing and need to do.

I have also supported the electrification of city vehicles beyond just buses. The real answer to protecting citizens from climate change is to stop contributing to climate change.

I also advocated successfully to accelerate the installation of switches at community buildings to quickly hook up generators for local power. This should be implemented next term."
