Dear Ecology Ottawa Community,

I want to share some exciting news with you. After serving as Program Coordinator at Ecology Ottawa for two years, I stepped into the role of Interim Executive Director in July; today, I’m honoured to write to you as permanent Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa.

I’m thrilled to take up this role. In the last four months, I’ve seen our organization in new ways—its opportunities, its importance in Ottawa, and its connectedness to partners and communities across our beloved city.

It’s also been gratifying to see our programs continue to unfold:

  • With our 15-Minute Neighbourhood program, we held a well-attended workshop on the Zoning By-law and launched a campaign calling for modifications that will foster sustainable communities
  • Our EcoYouth program saw the beginnings of our Youth Council, who meets regularly for workshops and discussions on ecological action to take in Ottawa, and the planting of two pollinator gardens
  • Our Electric School Bus campaign continues to develop public support and apply pressure on elected officials to electrify the fleet

We also continue monitoring City Hall through our Council Watch program, responding via delegations, engagement with councillors and City staff, and information-sharing with our community.

While we’ve remained productive, we’re also concerned. Ottawa City Council continues to delay implementing the Climate Change Master Plan, and the 2025 Budget doesn’t respond to Council’s own commitments, whether on climate or other topics. Premier Ford recently passed undemocratic, counterproductive, and dangerous legislation that will threaten cyclists’ safety in Ontario. We’re also expecting provincial and federal elections in coming months. The need for our work is on-going, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead it.

In the meantime, we cannot thank you enough for your continued support. I look forward to working with you toward building a green, equitable, and resilient Ottawa.

Sincerely,

William van Geest

Executive Director
