Planning Committee and Employment Lands

At the Planning Committee meeting held on March 26, 2013, the last agenda item discussed after a long meeting that lasted until midnight was the Building a Livable Ottawa 2031-Official Plan and Master Plan Review. Building a Livable Ottawa is a city-wide review of land use, transportation and infrastructure policies, the outcome of which will be an updated Official Plan that will impact the City of Ottawa for years to come. The proposed plan ultimately aims to make Ottawa a more vibrant, healthy and sustainable city, and focuses on reviewing 14 current planning issues which you can find summarized in these preliminary policy proposals.

Community Groups, Citizens Mobilize to Voice Strong Support for Complete Streets

Media invited to info session and campaign launch March 26 at the University of Ottawa

March 25, 2013 (Ottawa, ON)–Ecology Ottawa and a variety of community organizations are mobilizing their supporters and citizens across the city to voice support for Complete Streets for Ottawa.

Ryan Anders Whitney, of the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation and Complete Streets for Canada, is the keynote speaker tomorrow at an information session happening at the University of Ottawa. Ryan will discuss how a Complete Streets policy can direct Ottawa’s planners and engineers to create streets that work for all users at this key moment in the City’s planning history. The event coincides with the City’s review of its Transportation Master Plan:

Ecology Ottawa Welcomes City Leadership on Climate Change

March 25, 2013 (Ottawa): In response to Saturday’s unprecedented Greenhouse Gas Roundtable at Ottawa’s City Hall, Ecology Ottawa is releasing the following statement from its Executive Director, Graham Saul:

“The Mayor has announced that he wants a renewed Climate Change Plan for the City of Ottawa within a year and that is the kind of leadership that we need. Saturday’s climate change roundtable was a huge success and now it is time for action.

City of Ottawa Greenhouse Gas Roundtable Documents

On Wednesday March 20 the City of Ottawa emailed people who'd registered for the GHG Roundtable and directed them to an agenda and background documents for the event. That original City post can be seen here. The documents posted are reproduced here for your convenience.

The City also indicated that the event will be live streamed on the city website and that people who are registered but unable to attend should let the city know at [email protected] so that others from the waiting list can be allowed to attend.

Ecology Ottawa Applauds the City of Ottawa for Holding the Greenhouse Gas Roundtable

Awaits refreshed action plan to fight climate change at both the ‘community’ and ‘corporate’ levels

March 20, 2013 / Ottawa, ON — Ecology Ottawa’s executive director, Graham Saul, will be speaking as a panelist at the City of Ottawa’s Greenhouse Gas Roundtable scheduled for March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Ottawa City Hall.

Mr. Saul is available to speak with the media about this important event and is pleased to provide the community’s perspective on the City’s efforts related to climate change.

Roundtable Sold Out – Although invitations to the March 23^rd GHG Roundtable were only sent in the late evening on Thursday, February 28, and no information posted on the City’s website, by the afternoon of Friday, March 8 the city had begun sending “we have reached our maximum capacity” autoreplies to people interested in RSVPing. This strong show of community interest underlines the concern citizens of Ottawa feel for this issue and the growing recognition that while federal commitment fizzles, local initiative becomes all the more important. Council Watch on Downtown Moves and Transportation Committee March 4th

The Transportation Committee meeting held on March 4^th was kicked off by new chair Councillor Keith Egli. The hot topic of the month was the Downtown Moves study. Downtown Moves is an Urban Design and Transportation Study that aims to create a street environment that is more pedestrian, cycling and transit friendly by finding a balance among street users and by improving the streetscape.

Council Watch Monthly Digest- February 2013

Environment Committee (February 19): Councillors of the Environment Committee approved city staff’s recommendation to impose a 7% increase in 2013 water/sewer rates. Ecology Ottawa congratulates the Environment Committee on approving this motion, especially in light of the fact that office holders are normally under pressure to avoid rate increases, but hiking rates and adopting a user-pay approach ultimately encourages water conservation and discourages waste.

Council Watch on Seven Percent Increase in Water/Sewer Rates

The Environment Committee meeting held on February 19 primarily served as a discussion of the proposed seven percent increase in 2013 water and sewer rates. The meeting began with a presentation of the city’s proposed 2013 and 2014 Water and Wastewater Operating and Capital Budgets and featured two delegations from the public. The Committee unanimously approved the 2013 rate increase and supported the plan to invest the revenues in underground infrastructure projects.
