FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Ottawa, ON — Ecology Ottawa today announced the newest cohort of its EcoYouth Council. In its third year, Ecology Ottawa’s EcoYouth program seeks to engage youth in local environmental solutions, listening to and respecting their knowledge and perspectives. It facilitates the deepening of their knowledge about environmental issues and solutions in Ottawa, and seeks to meaningfully work out justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion through all their activities.
Ecology Ottawa attended City Council’s Environment and Climate Committee on Tuesday, June 16 to delegate on the City’s second Solid Waste Master Plan Update. Two years after the plan’s approval, the City is making meaningful progress on waste diversion, learning about and supporting community-led efforts. Much remains to be done, however, to encourage a zero-waste culture and cultivate a circular economy.
Ecology Ottawa today proudly launched its 2026 Trees for Today program, an initiative designed to complement their long-standing and beloved native tree seedling giveaway program. Ecology Ottawa is building on its longstanding commitment to increasing tree cover in low‑canopy and equity‑deserving neighbourhoods across Ottawa.
On March 26th, roughly 150 students, community members, and delegates from Ottawa’s many environmental groups gathered at the Shenkman Arts Centre for the final installation of David & Tara’s Stronger Together Tour. Bird Friendly Ottawa (BFO) today announced that the City of Ottawa has achieved Bird-Friendly City status at the intermediate level. “We’re delighted to have attained this achievement,” said Deborah Doherty, Co-chair of Bird Friendly Ottawa. “This shows the City of Ottawa’s commitment to protecting birds and their habitat and recognizes the work already accomplished to bring us here.”
Ecology Ottawa is thrilled to announce the recipients of our fourth annual Eco Awards! Ottawa is unusually blessed with an outstanding natural heritage and individuals dedicated to preserving it. We attended City Council’s Public Works and Infrastructure committee on April 23 to urge the adoption of a bike share system. As a City staff report outlines, this concept has undergone several studies already—most recently, a feasibility study. This study observed that bike share could be rolled out in early 2027; but instead of adopting the study’s recommendation, the Committee opted to produce—drum roll, please—another study.
Our Eco Awards are back! To celebrate Earth Week 2026, we’re again highlighting the people, places, plants, trees, and animals of Ottawa that inspire us, bring the community together, and enrich our ecosystem. Make a nomination today!
