As Canada’s 150th anniversary fast approaches, Impact Hub Ottawa is pleased to host a special edition of Hub & Spoke in partnership with the 150Alliance to bring local organizations and citizens together to explore what 2017 can look like for communities and neighbourhoods across the city.
This event will feature a cross-sector array of speakers who have big plans to engage the Ottawa community in 2017, from community projects to national initiatives to opportunities for funding.
Environmental Defence, along with the Council of Canadians and Transition Initiative Kenora, released a report yesterday about the risks of the proposed Energy East pipeline to our drinking water, and that of 5 million Canadians.
In Ottawa, the Energy East pipeline would cross the Mississippi and Rideau rivers, and travel along the Ottawa River upstream of the city, as well as the Oxford Aquifer, near North Grenville, that services 10 000 private wells. Over all, the report estimates that the pipeline puts 962 044 people's drinking water at risk, in Ottawa alone.

Diana Beresford-Kroeger is an scientist and environmentalist from the Ottawa area, and she is also one of Tree Ottawa’s champions! Her new documentary, Call of the Forest: The Forgotten Wisdom of Trees follows her journey in 'touring some of the earth’s last, great forests, from Japan, Ireland, Germany, to the United States and Canada, meeting many of the world’s ancient trees and educating people about their history and legacy – a history and legacy that is deeply entwined with our grand and benevolent neighbours, the trees'.

You may have read our press release and our letter, calling on the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce to cancel their insensitive event, promoting a tar sands pipeline on the eve of Earth Day. Here is some more information about the events and its organization. This event is a partnership, but there is no question that this is an Ottawa Chamber of Commerce event.

March 31, 2016, Ottawa, ON – Ecology Ottawa is calling on the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce to cancel an event promoting the proposed Energy East pipeline scheduled for April 21, the eve of Earth Day. A letter expressing concern about the event, sent by Ecology Ottawa two weeks ago to the Chamber of Commerce, has thus far gone unanswered (view letter here or at www.ecologyottawa.ca).
April 21st is the eve of Earth Day. It's also the day on which the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce decided to host Stefan Baranski, Ontario director of TransCanada, to promote Energy East, a 130 million litre of oil per day project (most of that being dilbit). We believe that this is either insensitive or intentionally provocative. Our executive director, Graham Saul, wrote the Chamber.
Ecology Ottawa is teaming up with Groupe d'Action d'Équiterre en Outaouais, along with the Centre Québécois du Droit de l'Environnement to present Pipelines, pouvoir et démocratie in Gatineau next Wednesday, March 30th at 7PM. It's a movie by director Olivier Asselin, and a National Film Board production, and the showing is at Lucien Brault Campus of Université du Québec en Outaouais (101 St-Jean-Bosco, room A-0200).
Time is precious, and we seem to waste so much of it stuck in traffic. Congestion pricing can be a part of the solution. Traffic congestion has enormous economic costs, as well as health care costs due to air pollution. The money raised with tolls can be used to repair Ottawa's potholes, reduce property taxes and make public transit more affordable.
