Nepean Climate Town Hall Meeting: Another Step Forward

Last Saturday morning, Nepean Federal MP Chandra Arya hosted a Climate Town Hall meeting to share ideas about what the current government and Canadians can do to reduce and adapt to climate change. The meeting began with a presentation by Mr. Arya in front of over 60 residents of Nepean. The MP went into detail on how the current government has invested in youth employment and infrastructure since election. After a lengthy presentation on the Liberal successes, Mr. Arya introduced the issue of the day: climate change.

Did You Know: Tree-Wind Turbines in Paris

Did you know that since 2015, you can find turbines in the shape of trees?

New Wind, a French energy company, has developed a sustainable electrical power generating system in the form of trees years. The idea is that each leaf is actually a mini turbine, catching the wind and rotating horizontally to produce energy. With these small turbines, even the smallest air current can help generate electrical energy, regardless of season. These aesthetically pleasing and fascinating turbines mimic the natural structure of trees, all while promoting and generating sustainable energy. They are specifically designed to capture air currents traveling through alleyways, around buildings, or up streets in urban settings. At only 26 feet high, they are significantly smaller and quieter than the enormous traditional wind turbines most people are familiar with, and thus fit perfectly into the space and noise restrictions set in cities. Though they cost roughly $36 500, the money is quickly paid off in a few years through the money saved by using the turbines.

In the windy mountains of Costa Rica, you will see numerous trees, from those bearing colorful fruits to others sporting thick spines, planted about 1 to 3 meters apart. Connected by long lines of barbed wire, these rudimentary-looking arrangements, known as living fences, have both economic and environmental benefits over their dead wood counterparts.

Provincial Climate Plan Sets Stage for Cities of Tomorrow

Ottawa (June 8, 2016): The Province’s new 5-Year Climate Change Action Plan will help set the stage for building the cities of tomorrow, says a group of urban-based environmental organizations from Ottawa, Toronto, Hamilton, Windsor and Oakville.

"This is a huge boost to our collective efforts to build world class cities in Ontario," said Graham Saul, Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa. "Fighting climate change and building great communities are two sides of the same coin. We want prosperous and compact neighbourhoods that are bustling with pedestrians and cyclists, fuelled by renewable energy, and connected by world class public transportation. That's what the city of tomorrow looks like, and that's the direction that this plan is taking us.

Climate Change Consultation Process Coming to Nepean

The next iteration of the Canada Climate Action consultations in Ottawa will be held in the federal riding of Nepean on 18 June. There, MP Chandra Arya will meet with constituents to hear their thoughts on climate change and how we as a country can best ameliorate the effects thereof. It will be held at 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM in Suite 204, 240 Kennevale Drive in Barrhaven. Much like the many consultations held across Ottawa in recent weeks with MPs McKenna, McGuinty, Vandenbeld, and McCrimmon, this is an historic opportunity for people to tell their elected representatives that climate change must be taken seriously.

Why I Volunteer With Ecology Ottawa

I like to bike. I bike to campus. I bike to the store to pick up groceries. I bike to the gym. And even when I used to work out in Kanata and live in the south end of Ottawa, there were some times when I would bike to work on a nice day. Biking is simply the best way to get around Ottawa, especially during the summer. It's exciting to be a part of an organization that looks to make Ottawa's streets more bike and people friendly, along with the great work they do fighting climate change and protecting our water and trees.
