Ecology Ottawa releases ecological planks for the 2025 Ontario Election

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

4 February 2025 | OTTAWA | TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE ALGONQUIN ANISHINAABEG — Ecology Ottawa today released a set of ten ecological planks relative to the present Ontario elections.

“This election is an opportunity for concrete ecological action in Ottawa and our province more generally,” said William van Geest, Ecology Ottawa Executive Director. “For years now, our provincial government has permitted sprawl, fostered car dependency, and loosened protections of our precious natural heritage, and now we have the opportunity to reverse this.”

The planks covered a range of ecological issues, from waste and public transit to energy and sustainable housing. The measures proposed will not only serve to fight climate change and foster biodiversity, but will help address the affordability and housing crises.

The planks include suggestions from the Ottawa community, which Ecology Ottawa had solicited when the writ dropped.

“It was gratifying to receive responses from our call for ecological planks, which ran the gamut of issues,” said van Geest. “This response is an indication of how much Ottawans want to advance ecology in our city.”

Ecology Ottawa will be urging candidates to adopt these planks in their own campaigns, and encouraging the public to ask candidates about them at the doorstep. Ottawans can also sign a petition to show their support for these planks.
