7. How would you ensure that Ottawa meets its emissions reductions commitments in Energy Evolution — i.e., achieving net zero by 2050?

Julie Fiala Chartrand

“Focus on walkability and active transportation education and messaging.”

Stéphanie Plante (Response originally given in French, translated to English by EO Volunteers)

“To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, we must empower residents to take action locally: buy secondhand, repair, share, compost, and recycle. I will continue to promote our secondhand shops and repair cafés to make these actions accessible and support a local economy that wastes less.

However, responsibility cannot rest solely on individual choices. The City must also make public transit more reliable, facilitate active travel, and improve the energy efficiency of its buildings. I would call for clear interim goals, budgets consistent with our commitments, and regular public monitoring of emissions reductions. A target for 2050 must translate into concrete decisions starting now.”
