The City has established, and supported in principle, the Ottawa Energy Evolution Plan. It is imperative that the City provides the funding, supports, and actions as outlined in the Plan to achieve its own GHG emission reduction targets, while transitioning to clean, renewable energy.

The City's Official Plan has established an urban boundary that provides space for the anticipated future growth of the city, while entrenching policy needed to guide development. We have seen past examples of the negative impact on residents when neighbourhoods are built without access to infrastructure, amenities, and services within walking, cycling, or short distances. During the OP discussions, I brought forward a direction to City staff that enshrined 15-minute communities across the city. I will continue to support policies that promote walkable, livable, high quality-of-life communities.

Ontario Energy Board recently rejected the approval of a pipeline replacement project proposed by Enbridge Gas, identifying that the Energy Evolution plan was a key factor in its decision as it would reduce future demand for natural gas.

As Councillor, I supported the City's creation of a High Performance Development Standard, which raised the performance of new building projects to achieve sustainable and resilient design. These standards must also be applied to new low-income housing builds, reducing the negative impact of aging, less efficient buildings on our environment.

This is an issue that needs to be tackled at all levels of government. Every storm is now manifesting as “once-in-a-century events", clearly demonstrating how the frequency of natural disasters and emergencies will only continue to increase. Our City must take action to fortify our operations, infrastructure, and emergency services to ensure that Ottawa is prepared for the effects of Climate Change.

I take public transit and have been doing so for decades. There were many changes to the system with the launch of the LRT that reduced OC Transpo’s reliability and made it nearly impossible to attract and retain ridership. The east end has historically had the highest number of transit users compared to other areas of Ottawa. To get those numbers back, OC Transpo needs to provide convenient service that gets riders where they need to go and runs frequently during peak periods. Rather than focusing predominately on funneling riders from suburban communities to the core, improving local routes will be required to ensure that transit is a truly viable option.

Historically, the City's east end has not seen the same rate of active transportation infrastructure growth as other areas of the city. This is in large part due to the age of our roads, which were built 20+ years ago solely with vehicles in mind. It is imperative that as older streets are renewed, active transportation use is taken into account and incorporated into the design and construction. This includes renewal of our sidewalks, multi-use pathways, and the inclusion of safe crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.

Our City needs to replace trees that have been lost, for instance during the May storm, while also expanding our tree canopy. As Councillor, I was so pleased to partner with Ecology Ottawa and Tree Canada to plant 500+ trees in my ward. I will actively pursue opportunities to continue this work in the coming years.

Last spring, I brought forward a motion that will see City policies change to enable residents and community groups to naturalize City right-of-ways in order to increase biodiversity, encourage pollinators, and decrease the City's reliance on mowing. I have also worked in partnership with local residents to reducing mowing of milkweed growth areas.

The City is currently engaging in public consultation on what waste collection changes are required to encourage waste reduction and diversion. I would be remiss to provide a response on what the results of those findings are without hearing from my community.
