I write as Ecology Ottawa’s new Interim Executive Director. As Interim Executive Director, I look forward to leading our small but mighty organization in its impactful organizing, programming and community-building work.

Unfortunately, Kathryn Dingle, who had recently taken on the role of Executive Director, had to unexpectedly resign due to health issues. On behalf of the Ecology Ottawa community, we wish her all the best in her recovery.

I have been appointed Interim Executive Director by the Board of Directors, and I’m eager to step into this new role.

I’ve served as Program Coordinator at Ecology Ottawa for over two years, initially to help deliver our tree giveaway program and other Living City programs (like our pollinator program). I have also undertaken political work with our Council Watch Program and adopted a convening role with our largest partnership, the Peoples Official Plan coalition. I led our campaigns opposing the Tewin clear-cut and demanding an end to fossil-fuel promotion in City facilities, and I regularly make delegations to committees of Ottawa City Council. Through all of this work, I’ve had the great privilege of meeting and working alongside many of Ecology Ottawa’s dedicated volunteers and supporters. This has helped me gain an intimate understanding of our organization, our advocacy ecosystem, and the most promising ways to make Ottawa the green capital of Canada.

As Interim Executive Director, I look forward to leading our small but mighty organization in its impactful organizing, programming and community-building work, including:

  • Continuing to launch our EcoYouth Ottawa program, which seeks to engage local youth in environmental action
  • Pursuing our advocacy and education efforts through our 15-Minute Neighbourhood program (check out our upcoming workshop!)
  • Progressing with our Electric School Bus program, which seeks to convert diesel school buses to electric
  • Continuing work with City officials and partners to hold Council accountable to their ecological commitments and urge climate action
  • Growing our community through connecting at festivals, markets, and other public events with the help of our wonderful volunteers.

We’re excited for what the coming weeks and months hold, and we thank you for your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

William van Geest

Interim Executive Director
