Ecology Ottawa welcomes the City of Ottawa as a Founding Partner in the Tree Ottawa initiative. Our goal of 1 million trees would not be attainable without the great work that the City is already doing.
The City of Ottawa has a variety of existing tree planting programs that can be found on their website. These programs have been in place and working to green-up Ottawa’s Urban Canopy for years! Below are a list of the City of Ottawa’s tree planting programs.

Trees in Ottawa– and around the world generally– are facing many threats. Threats include climate change (drought, flooding, increasingly more violent storms, warmer temperatures in some locations and cooler temperatures in others), invasive species such as the Emerald Ash Borer, and tree loss to urban expansion. Pollution is also a concern, including air pollution and acid rain.
It is so important to give young trees everything they need to ensure they grow up to be healthy and strong! All trees are vulnerable to threats including climate change, weather events, insects, and disease. A 2011 paper by Roman and Scatena found that the average street tree life expectancy is only 19-28 years.You can help change that!
Right after the Ottawa Park Summit, join Ecology Ottawa on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22, 2017, for our first Earth Day Celebration at Makerspace North.
Let's face it, protecting the environment can be tough on the spirit, (with the looming mass extinction, corporate greed and impending catastrophic climate change, for instance). We should, therefore, take the opportunity every so often to celebrate our fabulous community and all the brilliant people in it doing Gaia's good work.
Volunteers are the driving force behind Ecology Ottawa!
Ecology Ottawa is volunteer driven. That means what we get done gets done mostly by volunteers, and because volunteers have helped decide on Ecology Ottawa's priorities.
We depend on volunteers to get the word out, organize events, research innovative solutions to urban environmental problems, and help with our database. OREC and the German Embassy of Ottawa are partnering with Ecology Ottawa for the Ottawa premiere of the German documentary Power to Change - the Energy Rebellion. The film will be followed by a discussion with by Rainer Hinrichs-Rahlwes, Vice-President of the European Renewable Energies Federation.

It's the start of a brand new year. 2017 marks a time of change and celebration. Celebrations have already kicked off for Canada's 150th anniversary.
