With the City of Ottawa having released Phase 1 of their Water Environment Strategy, played host to a Water Roundtable public consultation Saturday, June 14th, and set stormwater management clearly in their sights for the development of the Water Environment Strategy Phase 2, Ecology Ottawa feels action on water issues has built up an incredible potential for progress. Now we must press the City to keep that going. Never has there been a more important time to rallying around our city's most crucial resource - water.
The street that you live on is more than just a thoroughfare for cars. It's also a place, it's a destination, it's an extension of your home, and it's something to be proud of. When the city tears up your street, do you want a say in what it will look like when they put it back together again? If you enjoy riding your bike, walk around your neighbourhood, or if you rely on public transit, then this is the opportunity to have your voice heard!If you want to help Ecology Ottawa push for complete streets in your area, please take a look at the list of anticipated street renewals for your ward below. These lists are a huge opportunity because they serve as a kind of "street map" for building a better neighbourhood. The city has made it clear that the most cost effective and efficient way to start widespread implementation of Complete Streets is by including aspects in upcoming street renewal projects. Transit, bike lanes, and wider sidewalks will not be part of the plan though unless we make it clear to the City that we want them. This is why we need your help to make sure Complete Streets are prioritized!
On Saturday May 31 and Saturday June 7, Friends of Petrie Island, Ecology Ottawa, Ottawa Riverkeeper and other committed volunteers came together to clean up and protect the wetlands of Petrie Island. One of many islands in the Ottawa River, Petrie Island constitutes a local treasure full of beautiful green colours, blooming flowers, turtle habitats, freshwater ponds and a wide diversity of animal species.

Over 60 active transportation advocates, organizations, and community leaders from across the Nation’s Capital took part in Ecology Ottawa’s Complete Streets Strategy Forum held on March 28th, 2014. The one-day event featured a panel discussion from Councillors Egli, Chernushenko, Fleury, Holmes, and Wilkinson, followed by an interactive strategy session whereby participants discussed ways to help ensure that walking, cycling, and public transit would continue to be prioritized in the city.

American Elm is one of North America's best-known trees, famous for its arching vase-like growth form, very large size, long life, strong (difficult to split) wood, and ideal growth form. It is something of a generalist species. It especially favours seasonally wet soils, but takes to almost any type of soil and tolerates urban conditions well.
This weekend on Saturday May 31st and June 1st from 9 am til dusk both days, the Experimental Farm will be beginning their Beyond the Edge: Artists Gardens at the Farm exhibit. This project will begin with the building of a labyrinth under a 100 year old red oak facilitated by Barbara Brown. The public is welcome to join and help out with the building of this project either of these two days and well as enjoy the project for the rest of the summer. Other events to be hosted at the finished labyrinth
are a blessing and walk ceremony in celebration of National Aboriginal Day and the Summer Solstice on Saturday, June 21st (more information to follow) and the official opening of Beyond the Edge: Artists Gardens at the Farm on Thursday June 26th, 5-7:30.
