In April 2021, we joined Walkable Ottawa, Greenspace Alliance and arborist Andrew Boyd to hold a workshop to consider neighbourhood walkability with a focus on how to protect the tree canopy. Tree canopy and a shady walk are essential to a walkable neighbourhood. We were honoured to be joined by Natasha Bertrand helping us to explore the indigenous connection to trees and Lisa Nisbet, Environmental Psychology Professor discussing Trees and Mental Wellbeing.

Where it goes once it hits the ground and what it picks up along the way can heavily impact the aquatic habitats and recreational activities that the Ottawa River provides. The People’s Official plan (POP) - an informal coalition of grass roots organizations - focuses on greater urgency and ambition on climate and social justice issues to the development of Ottawa’s Official plan. This alliance has incessantly opposed the towers and corridors approach proposed in the City’s revised Official Plan and endorsed building a more livable and compact city (i.e., intensification), public investments that will build a more equitable city, and a city embarking on a low carbon development path.

As the representative urban face of Canada in a changing world, Ottawa has a responsibility to be involved in current international events. The National Capital region in particular must demonstrate flexibility in adapting infrastructures, programs and policies to answer challenges that issue from far beyond municipal, provincial and federal borders.
