Climate change is the most critical environmental issue of our time. You know it, I know it, and our representatives at city council know it. That is why it is crucial that our city adequately fund climate action in the upcoming budget.
The Canadian Nuclear Energy Alliance is planning to build a radioactive waste storage facility in Chalk River that is not up to standards of nuclear waste storage.
In 2015, the Canadian National Energy Alliance won a contract to manage the Chalk River Nuclear laboratories, which is a nuclear power plant located in Chalk River. Chalk River is a small town with just over 1,000 residents, and is located 182 kilometers northwest of Ottawa. The town has a nuclear facility called “Canadian Nuclear Laboratories” that is located less than 10 kilometres away from the Ottawa River, and there is a proposed construction plan for nuclear waste storage that might lead to environmental damage and could put human health at risk.
Over the summer, Ecology Ottawa has given away more than 10,000 free trees to people in the Ottawa area, and we could not have done it without our many volunteers, partners, and staff who worked so hard to make the tree giveaway events a success. It was a pleasure to visit so many communities who care about environmental issues and want to do their part in growing the urban canopy. Here is a list of the top summer tree giveaway events that exceeded all expectations. Again, thanks to everyone involved, we could not have done it without you!

2017 is the last year to apply for the MicroFIT program. After 8 years of encouraging the development of renewable energy technology the Government of Ontario is discontinuing MicroFIT. Make sure you send in your application before December 28th 2017 for your own micro-scale renewable energy project. For the uninitiated, the MicroFIT (feed-in tariff) program supports the development of small renewable energy projects, such as solar panel installations. Homeowners get paid for the power they produce at a guaranteed rate, earning a return on their investment and contributing to a cleaner environment. This increases production and lowers the cost of manufacturing these technologies, leading to a positive feedback loop that increases the viability of renewable energy as an alternative to fossil fuels.
