Ecology Ottawa is looking for an Energy East Outreach Volunteer to join our dynamic team. The Clean Energy Outreach Volunteer will organize to stop the proposed Energy East tar sands pipeline by reaching out to key members of the community and inviting them to join our campaign. This position involves immersion in the tools and techniques of grassroots organizing, outreach, data management and communications.
The constant demand for energy has resulted in unsustainable methods of energy exploitation. The most common and well-known? Fossil fuels. But what if trees themselves could be used as an energy source to power our homes?
In Southern U.S., tree scraps are being collected, gathered and imported to Europe, where they are then burned as a source of renewable, electric energy. This act alone has doubled the demand for biomass exports from the States in a single year.
Many Canadians are under the assumption Canada's forests are being protected just fine in comparison to other countries. But that's far from true. We're losing tons of trees to industrial practises, trees that won't grow back for another 80 years, assuming trees were planted to make up for the losses.
The Boreal Forest alone is daily experiencing losses. These losses include:

There are several ways you can promote trees in Ottawa
1. Plant Trees
If you'd like to plant a tree (or trees) on your own property check out the Tree Nursery on this site for a listing of various suppliers. If you're specifically interested in a fruit tree, we recommend Hidden Harvest for a wide variety of trees available at modest cost. If you would like to put a tree in front of your house on city property, the City of Ottawa runs the Trees of Trust program.

Protecting Trees in Ottawa
Trees are vulnerable to a multitude of stressors such as drought, insects and disease. Tree Ottawa’s Adopt-a-Tree Program significantly improves a tree’s chance of survival thanks to residents like you who commit to basic tree care. In fact, research shows adopted trees can grow two times faster than trees that do not receive adequate after planting care. By adopting a tree in your neighborhood, you can help create a thriving and healthy urban tree canopy in our city for future generations to come.
With limited space, vertical forests are becoming more and more popular. And Italian architecture Stefano Boeri is leading the way.
Boeri has designed numerous buildings with heavy emphasis on incorporating greenery into the architecture. His buildings have incorporated real trees on multiple floor levels, creating both aesthetically pleasing, environmental sights for anyone who sees it in the distance.
