BREAKING: TransCanada has officially abandoned the Energy East pipeline

For immediate release - Ecology Ottawa celebrates the demise of the Energy East pipeline

October 5, 2017

(Ottawa, ON) - Ecology Ottawa is celebrating TransCanada’s announcement earlier today that officially terminated the company’s proposed Energy East pipeline project. Energy East, which would ship 1.1 million barrels of diluted bitumen across Ottawa, posed a direct threat to the city’s water, land and climate. Since the pipeline project was announced in 2013, Ecology Ottawa has been working in communities across Ottawa to mobilize resistance to the pipeline.

Happy National Tree Day!

It’s no secret that trees are important to our wellbeing. There have been multiple scientific studies that show this! After the Emerald Ash Borer killed millions of urban trees in Ottawa Tree Ottawa was created. We wanted to make sure that Ottawa had a healthy, resilient urban forest and that the benefits of this could be enjoyed by all. We thought National Tree Day would be a great time to look back, reflect on what we’ve done and get excited for the future!

Tree Fest Ottawa 2017 - Promote. Protect. Celebrate. Connect.

Tree Fest Ottawa's fall tree festival will be held on September 23rd and 24th in Brewer Park at Brewer Pond. Food, art, guided walks, music, workshops and much more. Ecology Ottawa will be there both days giving away FREE TREES, conduct a Nature Trivia game for kids, and on Sunday helping to plant the trees donated by the City of Ottawa.

EcoFest updates: partners, speakers, silent auctions and more

Only a few weeks to go until EcoFest – Ecology Ottawa’s 10^th anniversary celebration! Join us on Thursday, October 12 at the Aberdeen Pavilion in Lansdowne Park for a night of fun, celebration and networking. Tickets are only $35, and you can buy them here.

EcoFest is a celebration of Ottawa’s strong, vibrant and diverse environmental community. Ecology Ottawa has had the honour of working with so many of you over the past decade, and we want to celebrate. Here’s some of the fun we’ve lined up, with a lot more to come.

Canupy: Symposium and Chance to Adopt a Tree!

Tree Ottawa has been working with artist Jean Bridge surrounding the Canupy: Achilles Shadow art installation that is part of the Canadensis: Beyond the Edge Artists’ Garden installation at the Experimental Farms for the past two years. This art installation, composed of orphan trees that Jean and Tree Ottawa collected across Ottawa for the last two years, is coming to a close. Ottawa’s Inadequate Recycling and Green Bin Programs Shorten Life of the City’s Trail Road Landfill Site

Waste Watch Ottawa Analysis, Promoted by Ecology Ottawa, Finds City’s Lack of Planning and Public Education is Squandering Landfill Capacity

Ottawa is dumping much of its recyclable and green waste into landfill, squandering both the resources that could be captured and precious landfill space.

Waste Watch Ottawa’s detailed analysis of online Ontario data of provincial waste diversion from disposal performance and a City of Ottawa 2014/2015 report obtained via a municipal freedom of information request, was conducted with the assistance of University of Ottawa students and Councillor Jeff Leiper’s office. Based on a review of municipal best practices, options are offered to improve the design and effectiveness of recycling and green bin programs, solid waste diversion policies and programs, and waste collection and processing activities in Ottawa.

Canupy: Even More Free Trees!

Many people that we have met over the summer while conducting our Tree Giveaway have asked the same question: do we know where they can get a larger tree for free?? Well, we have an answer for you! Canupy: Achilles Shadow is an art installation at the Experimental Farms (map below) which has housed orphan trees for the past two years and this is your opportunity to take one home. Not only will they be larger and more hardy, as they have been in the ground for two years, but they are also celebrity trees as they have been part of this art installation enjoyed by many!

After five years as Ecology Ottawa's Executive Director, I am stepping down this week. My parting request is that you help make EcoFest, Ecology Ottawa's tenth anniversary event on October 12, the largest celebration of the environmental movement in the history of the great City of Ottawa.
