REMINDER: Tree Ottawa Team Meeting

Tonight at 6 PM will be the second meeting of the Tree Team, and so much has happened since the first one!

Last time we went over (briefly) Tree Ottawa's annual report and discussed the initiative's successes as well as challenges. The group had some great idea's for how we could organize and dovetail off of existing events (such as the Great Glebe Green Garage Sale). We also got to discuss what each attendee was doing/interested in doing for Tree Ottawa and manage all of our expectations concerning time and time management.

Our Trees—Our Heritage: To Protect or Destroy?

This Thursday evening in Almonte the Mississppi Valley Field Naturalists will be hosting a lecture entitled "Our Trees—Our Heritage: To Protect or Destroy?". The talk will be given by Justin Peters, Director of Programs and Senior Naturalist for Quest Tours, and will cover various aspects of the value trees provide, as well as the many threats they face. Ecology Ottawa Summer Internship

Ecology Ottawa is looking for Interns to join a dynamic team. The Intern will be asked to perform three main tasks: participate in direct outreach; receive training; and conduct work on a special project that touches on one of Ecology Ottawa’s core campaign areas. Campaigns touch on rivers and streams, the urban tree canopy, municipal climate change strategy, complete streets, and stopping the Energy East tar sands pipeline. This position involves immersion in the tools and techniques of research, communications, event management, canvass organizing, volunteer management and data management.

Election work with Ecology Ottawa

The 2015 federal election is right around the corner. We know that federal action on climate change, light rail, the Ottawa River and stopping the Energy East tar sands pipeline would go a long way to making Ottawa a more sustainable city. That's why Ecology Ottawa sees this election as a unique opportunity to promote environmental leadership in the city.

Join Us: Act on Climate March in Quebec City, April 11th!

On April 11, tens of thousands will gather in Quebec City for “Act On Climate”, what many are saying will be the biggest march in Canada for climate action.

All of Canada’s premiers are heading to Quebec City at that time to talk about climate. And so are we. We want to make sure our voices are heard, and send a unified message.

We want strong climate protections. We want renewable energy. What we don’t want is more tar sands or pipeline expansion, including Energy East.

New Action Plan for Ottawa Suburbs

The City of Ottawa is in the process of creating an action plan to develop the City’s suburbs, where 60% of development land occurs.

According to Alain Miguelez, Program Manager of Intensification and Neighbourhoods with the City of Ottawa, the new outskirts of the capital will no longer be dominated by rows of single-family homes.

The evening will feature a discussion of urban tree issues and how to ensure they thrive and survive and make our cities more livable for decades to come! The event is free, but donations are welcome and support the Glashan Greening Project.

Rideau Street needs more than a facelift

"...we need to build a street that fosters pedestrian traffic. One of the biggest issues on Rideau Street is how very dangerous it is. Just last week, a pedestrian was hit by a truck at Rideau and King Edward. That intersection, along with Rideau and Cumberland, is one of the city’s most dangerous intersections for pedestrians and bicyclists. You can’t have a community engaged with the life of the street if the street tends to take the lives of the community."

Tree Ottawa campaign featured in March edition of The OSCAR!

We would like to extend a big thank you to Tim Leah and the rest of the Old Ottawa South Community Association for featuring the Tree Ottawa campaign in this month's edition of the Ottawa South Community Association Review (OSCAR). The article discusses the importance of our trees, threats they face, and actions residents can take to ensure the health of our neighbourhood trees for generations to come.

Sustain Lowertown Action Committee Meeting Tonight!

Sustain Lowertown is hosting its first Action Committee meeting! The Sustain Lowertown Action Committee will be a key group of local residents who will decide on key elements of the project and carry out concrete actions.

The Committee will be formed during the meeting. Membership is open to all residents and interested parties. The meeting will involve the development of a communication plan, finalizing priority themes, and a discussion of possible initiatives of 2015. All residents and interested parties are welcomed to attend the meeting.
