Media Release: Environmental Groups to Minister Murray: Help Cities Get Ready for Climate Change

Today, urban-focused environmental groups responded to a proposal for climate change consultations by Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Glen Murray, with a simple message: make sure municipalities have the resources they need to get Ontario’s cities ready to fight climate change.

“It’s great to see that the Province wants the public’s input into what their climate change plan should look like,” said Graham Saul, Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa. “Because most Ontarians live in cities, we need the Province to do more to help municipalities get ready for climate change.”

Asking City Council about Climate Change Actions in the Budget

As Mayor Jim Watson confirms here in answer to Ecology Ottawa volunteer Martin Callsen’s question, only one of the five items recommended by the Air Quality and Climate Change Management Plan for inclusion in the 2015 budget is, in fact, budgeted for.

The other climate change actions have to duke it out with other undefined initiatives as council negotiates their Term of Council Priorities. A fund of $37.4 million dollars in 2015 is set aside for initiatives that come out of this priority setting exercise.

Are you passionate about making your community more green and environmentally friendly?  Volunteer with Tree Ottawa! Many opportunities will be coming up, so check our website often for updates. Current opportunities will be listed here.  Right now we are looking for volunteers to join our team for the following projects:

1. Adopt-a-Tree Outreach: Have you noticed all those city trees along the sidewalks? Don’t they add a lovely touch of nature to our city streets? Unfortunately, those trees have an average lifespan of 7 years. All they need is a little tender loving care. They need to be adopted!  We’ve just rolled out our free web-based Adopt-a-Tree Mapping Tool, and we need several passionate individuals to go out and promote it!  This is a relationship building opportunity, and not for the shy. If you are comfortable talking to people, enjoy being outside and active, have good technical skills, and are passionate about trees, then you'd be great for this.

Tomorrow night the Glebe Community Association - Environment Committee is hosting a free public talk:  Root causes of extreme weather, how events will worsen, impact globally and in the Glebe. What should we do? 

This neat talk will be presented by Professor Paul Beckwith at the Ecclesiax Church (2 Monk St., Ottawa, Ontario K1S 3Y6) at 7:30 PM, and will be followed by discussion.

Acidic water and corroded pipes conspire to leak the equivalent of 2,888 Olympic-sized swimming pools worth of Cape Breton’s treated water into the ground every year before it reaches its intended customers – that’s a 40 per cent leakage rate.

This lost water is also a massive waste of energy. Just about anything a municipality wants to do with its water – pump it, treat it or heat it – requires energy. This relationship is known as the water-energy nexus. Leaking water is, in a very real way, leaking energy, and such massive inefficiencies – right across the country – are the reason water is the new frontier of energy conservation.

Tu B'Shevat, the Jewish New Year of Trees, begins today at sundown and ends at sundown tomorrow. The holiday takes its name from its date on the Hebrew calendar, with 'Tu' referring to the 15th, and 'Shevat' being the 11th month of the Jewish calendar.tubishvat

Traditionally Tu B'Shevat is the new year for the purpose of calculating the age of trees. In recent times it has been celebrated with tree-plantings and ecological awareness campaigns.
