Attend Ontario Provincial Climate Consultation - March 11 at the RA Centre

The Province of Ontario is consulting with residents prior to bringing in a price on carbon. On Wednesday March 11 Provincial representatives will be in Ottawa and invite you to meet with them and give them feedback on how to fight climate change.

Please consider attending.

In particular Ecology Ottawa would like you to remind the event organizers that the Province needs to include in its plans ways that cities can participate in climate solutions.

City Budget Fails on Promised Climate Action

The City promised a climate change plan but have no money for it in the budget!
The election last fall, and the City’s climate change plan before that, put us in a better position than ever to see action on climate change at the City of Ottawa.

However, that potential is already being threatened.

Even though the City’s own climate plan, approved by Council just back in May 2014 “recommended for consideration in the 2015 budget”

Rideau Valley Conservation Authority Set To Plant 5 Millionth Tree!

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority started its forest management and tree planting program back in 1983. Since then it has worked tirelessly with its many partners to help landowners have trees planted on their land and be a reliable source of information and expert advice to stakeholders at all levels in the Rideau Valley watershed.

This spring the RVCA plans to plant 240,000 trees, including it's 5 millionth tree! Congratulations! To learn more about the RVCA visit them at www.rcva.ca.

First Transit Committee Meeting of 2015

So, I attended my first City of Ottawa Transit Commission meeting yesterday.  Two main motions were discussed and passed.

The first motion related to how many regularly scheduled meetings the Transit Commission should hold in a year.  With a goal being optimization, the Council Governance Review recommended the frequency be dropped to 8 per year from the existing once per month but allow for the continued ability to schedule Special Meetings should the need arise.  The delegation from CAWI (City of All Woman Initiative) was counter to the reduction of meetings as it stated that there would be less opportunity for the public to interact with the committee curbing their democratic rights.  CAWI also brought up multiple points related to the difficulties the public has with meetings such as last minute changes to the agenda causing lengthy wait times for the public and the challenges of English as-a-second language speakers.  After a few procedural questions posed by council the motion was passed. Will there be enough meetings to handle the issues that need to be brought before the Commission?  Will the public see improvements and have ample opportunity to bring forward their opinions, suggestions and concerns? And will there be a need for multiple Special Meetings and if so will it even be possible to insert them into the schedule.  Time will tell.

The trunks have been measured, and the results are in for Carp Hills Biggest Tree! The winner is…

carphillsbigtreeThe Carp Hills in West Carleton-March ward is home to some of the oldest and largest trees in the City of Ottawa. Recently, local conservation group Friends of the Huntley Highlands held a contest to find the Carp Hills Biggest Tree. The contest aimed to encourage residents and landowners to take a closer look at the nature around them and appreciate one of the largest environmentally significant areas in the National Capital. Thirteen qualifiying entries were received and measured by Tree Ottawa Champion, Owen Clarkin. Click here to learn more about the winner and the runners up!

Project Wild Thing at the Mayfair, Weds Feb 25th

Hopewell Avenue Public School is having a fundraiser for their Every Leaf Counts campaign to green-up their school yard!

The Mayfair Theatre is screening PROJECT WILD THING on 25 February, with all profits being donated to the Every Leaf Counts campaign.  This thought provoking documentary about reconnecting kids to nature won numerous awards in the UK, and has sparked a movement to get outside.
