Report shows Energy East poses great risk to Gatineau and Ottawa drinking water

World heritage site and river directly threatened by pipeline spill

A spill from the proposed Energy East pipeline could have catastrophic impacts on the Rideau, Mississippi and Ottawa rivers, and put the region’s drinking water at risk. These are the findings of a new report by the independent Montreal-based technical firm Savaria Experts-Conseils Inc.

Cardinal Creek Tree Planting

This Saturday, October 1st, come out and help plant 100 trees. We need 20 volunteers to do it, will you come?

Celebrating the Champlain Oaks Project: Riverine Forest Gets New Trees

On Saturday, September 17, 2016, Riverine Forest was the site of an important urban tree planting project.

Riverine Forest is a small woodland located on the edge of Champlain Park in the Westboro neighbourhood of Ottawa. Residents and volunteers from the Champlain Park Community Association (CPCA), with the support of the National Capital Commission (NCC), gathered to plant 25 new trees.

Cyclists and Pedestrians Unite!

Ottawa has a Riverkeeper to keep our rivers clean and healthy, so why shouldn’t we also have a Pathmaker to do the same for our streets?

It’s a sad fact. Ottawa – a city of one million people – lacks a full-time advocate dedicated to improving the health and safety of its streets for all users. We need a strong, independent voice to speak up on the issues that matter to cyclists and pedestrians in our city. We need someone to fight for better bike infrastructure, more complete streets, more accessibility and more connectivity.

Jim dedicated his life towards the idea of sustainable development and environmental protection and was among the first architects of the sustainable development movement before this notion became mainstream. Ottawa’s trees clean our air, improve the health of our residents, beautify our communities, and improve our quality of life. You are invited to learn more by attending this event which includes displays by organizations focused on environment and healthy living and a presentation by Professor Marc Berman. His study, conducted by a team of researchers from the United States, Canada, and Australia, researched the implications of an increase of urban trees in Toronto and residents feeling healthier.

Trudeau needs to stop Energy East pipeline reviews and overhaul NEB

Over 50 organizations from across Canada, including Ecology Ottawa, call on PM Trudeau to shut down the review of the Energy East and the NEB process pending urgently needed reforms. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister and Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr, these groups point out the inappropriate actions of two of the NEB review process board members having met with the ex-Premier and consultant of TransCanada, Jean Charest.

Trailhead Sign Ceremony and Group Hike

Sunday, 16 October at 10:00am

Mark your calendars for a fall hike on the Crazy Horse Trail. Friends of Carp River will have a short ceremony to commemorate their new trailhead sign. There will then be a hike on the trail to enjoy the autumn colours and see all the work that volunteers and Trail Coordinator Bernard have done to improve trail conditions. Bring a snack for a stop at one of the new scenic lookouts over the beaver pond.

Ecology Ottawa is a not-for-profit, grassroots and volunteer-driven organization working to make Ottawa the green capital of Canada. We have been working on sustainable transportation for five years through advocacy on issues like complete streets, light rail, bike lanes, street design, accessibility and funding for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure.

Trees Cooperate and Communicate on the Forest Internet

Trees have an internet all their own. Hidden deep under those tree trunks is an intricate communication system with hubs and networks. But this internet is not a place of selfies and cat videos, it’s a complex system of cooperation and sharing. Suzanne Simard, a professor and professional forester at the University of British Columbia, has been studying the way trees communicate and cooperate with each other underground for years. She recently explained how the forest internet works at a TEDSummit in June 2016.
